Just a bit further down the road, in the Shiawassee County community of Durand, former Grand Funk Railroad frontman, Mark Farner, headlined a third year event known as Durand Veterans of Rock 'n' Roll. In its first two years, the fundraising concert was performed by a band consisting of Durand area musicians from decades past, and raised funds for local veterans-related initiatives. The crowd in the two previous years neared or surpassed the 800 attendance mark.
This year, the Durand Veterans of Rock 'n' Roll were the opening act for Mark Farner's American Band. The evening event began with a flyover and a veterans tribute, before rock music filled Durand High School's Roundhouse Stadium late into the evening.
This year's crowd numbered higher than the event's previous years, despite tickets being priced twice as much as in the past two years.
The Mark Farner performance was part of his 50th anniversary tour. Meanwhile, many of the members of the Durand Veterans of Rock 'n' Roll will join together again next month to raise funds for a veterans initiative in nearby Lennon.
