Violators could face a fine of up to $500.

The ordinance does not prohibit marijuana use on private property.

Council members said it would be prudent to wait until after Michigan's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs issues its rules for retail marijuana, which it has not yet done.

Council can revisit the ordinance once that happens.
