Total heroin-related deaths across the Ingham, Eaton, Ionia, Isabella, Shiawassee region decreased by more than 11%. Benzodiazepine-related deaths decreased by more than 24%.
The number of opioid-related deaths remained unchanged.
There were a number of significant increases as well; Fentanyl-related by 45%, Fentanyl analogue-related by 100%, Mathadone-related by 27%, Cocaine-related by 31% and Amphetamine o Methamphetamine-related by 53.8%.
The report notes that heroin-related deaths may be under reported as the drug rapidly metabolized to morphine in the body. Consequently, morphine-related deaths may be over reported.
The report also notes that as Methamphetamine is metabolized to amphetamine in the body, whether the death was from illicit use or prescription use.
